Specifically, it's the last three measures of his second symphony. To me, they sum him up quite nicely. I hope you enjoy it. This file is in compacted Audio Image File Format (AIFF) (requires Sample Editor 1.0.2 (one kick-butt AIFF editor!), Wavicle 1.0, or a similar sound editor); which has been binhexed with Compact Pro (requires mcvert on the UNIX side, or a BinHex 4-compatible program on the Mac side). The AIFF format allows inclusion of copyright information and is multi-platform compatible. Sample Editor (and maybe some of the commercial sound utilities) can convert "AIFF"s to "sfil"s so you can use them as system sounds or with Sound Mover. Byron C. Needleman <5257779@MCIMAIL.com> Subject: [*] Alias Director 2.7 Alias Director by Laurence Harris ($7 shareware) is the best of the various alias management tools I've seen. Some special features include the ability to make aliases without icons (so that many can be put on the desktop), drag and drop capability, pull down location menus that remember the recent places you put your aliases (Apple menu, desktop, etc.), the TrashEmAll feature which moves all aliases and files for a given alias/file (on all mounted disks) to the Trash when the alias/file is dragged over the AD icon with the command key held down. Version 2.7 of Alias Director corrects the following bugs: Sets the locations of files moved to the trash by TrashEmAll so they would appear together in a neat column instead of all over the place in the trash. Also insures you can "Put Away" an original in the trash, even if it was in the trash when you used TrashEmAll. Implements AD's drag and drop TrashEmAll, move-to-desktop, and add-to-menu features without requiring the user to remember their key down requirements. A few people noticed that some aliases created on the desktop wouldn't support drag & drop. This has now been fixed. As a part of that fix, the desktop is now a permanent choice on the menu. Also, a bug that could result in a freeze when creating a blank icon has been fixed. The New Location file directory box has been modified to be a little friendlier. And it won't jump any more. Really. It was just unbelievable. But I rented it _twice_, so I could capture these samples from it. They're all taken from a group psychology session of people who think they've been visited by these alien beings. Two are from the same guy, who's an atrociously bad actor; he's talking about how the media ignores and laughs off stories of UFOs. The samples are "It may sound like a cliche, but [awkward pause while he swallows] these visitors do come in gigantic ships," and "But, um, [awkward pause while he swallows] the joke's on us." The third's from a ditzy woman who's been, like everyone else, examined by the aliens: "I didn't ask for a rectal probe, Laurie! It's not funny!" Just put FileTyper in a handy place (I ususally keep it on the Desktop just above the Trash). Drag files and folders onto it, edit them, and click "Change." FileTyper 3.2 offers many features not found in other commercial or public domain programs. Also included with FileTyper is a utility with which you can create and edit custom "AutoTypers," which are very small applications that automatically make a specific change to files dropped on them. For instance, you can create an AutoTyper which changes the creator of TEXT files to the creator of your favorite "GIF" program. Version 3.2 is a bug fix upgrade from version 3.1. Here is a list of changes: Fixed a really stupid bug introduced in version 3.1 that caused an error -35 when using "Change All" with folders. I think I've been able to fix the nasty problem that often caused drag and drop to fail on newly created AutoTypers, usually making it necessary to rebuild the desktop. They've just sent me a new demo of a much rewritten FTP Server. Its better than ever. I particularly like its support for aliases and the 'owners' ability to launch apps and even reboot the Mac remotely. For many Mac users with direct Internet connections this is a must have. About FTP Share -------------- FTP Share is a set of communications applications which allows a Macintosh computer to be used as a FTP file server. It can be connected to by any computer with an FTP client application over a TCP/IP network. It provides a user access scheme similar to that of Apple's File Sharing in System 7.0 and it allows : - Files to be transfered between a Macintosh and FTP Clients, - Up to 20 clients to connect at the same time, - An access profile to be given to each user, - Guest users to connect to the file server, - Support of Aliases and many other featuresI As the File Sharing, FTP Share comprises four components : - FTP Share Setup : an application to start, stop and configure the server, - FTP Share Monitor : an application to monitor the server's activity, - FTP Share Users : an application to define the users profiles, - FTP Share Extension : an INIT to install in the System Folder. FTP Share works in the background of the Macintosh leaving it free to be used as usual. It also provides a monitor which allows you to see who is connected to the file server and which folders are being accessed. Although FTP Share supports some special System 7.0 features such as Aliases and Balloon Help, it can also be used on System 6.0.4 machines. About this Demo Version --------------------- This FTP Share package contains a Demo Version which is fully functionnal, except that the server stops running after 8 minutes. Then, you have to restart your machine to activate it again. If this limitation prevents you from performing extended tests, please contact ASC : they can send you a Demo Version valid for a period from 15 to 30 days. You can toggle a radio button or checkbox by holding down the command and shift keys and typing the first letter of its name. Type Date - Types the current date, as if you had typed it on the keyboard. You may specify a long or short format for the date. The eleven 2's you are seeing have been placed into the Page Comments text by a bug in the "Color Sample Specs" section of the program. That is, when Page Comments are empty and you select Color Sample Specs random text is added to the Comments. Of course this is not supposed to happen and has been corrected in version 2.37. Thanks for the bug report! Jim theTypeBook is a Mac utility which aids in the creation and maintenence of a typeface reference book. This type of reference is extremely popular in the Graphics and Typesetting industries. It helps people (both clients and employees) select typefaces by demonstrating the various artistic attributes of each face on a printed page. theTypeBook is compatible with virtually all printers. All current Postscript and Truetype fonts are supported. In the past, users of Mac DTP have had to generate typebooks themselves via the layout of each individual page in their favorite DTP application. Even when using a template strategy it is still necessary to select the Font and the FontStyle for each page, then edit the text so overflows and holes are controlled within reason. All this adds up to a significant amount of non-billable hours required to produce a typeface reference book. theTypeBook eliminates the need for operator involvement in creating each page. Selection of the desired typefaces and issue of the Print command is all that is required. In fact there are no other direct functions available. (Q) Two interesting notes about Finder behavior. Any one else seen these phenomena? 1 The hardware setup is PB170, Sys 7.0.1(Tup 1.1.1), and a Syquest44M removable (with terminators as proscribed by Apple). I dismount the Syquest from the desktop (via the trash), remove the HD platter and turn the power to the drive off. The Finder's menu freezes (the SCSI cables are still attached). I turn the power to the drive back on, and the menus come back to life. Is this normal? Something special about the PB170 SCSI connection? Something the matter in which the SCSI is being mounted? BTW, the removable (formatted by Apple utilities) does not need any manufacture-supplied extensions to mount at bootup. 2 Occasionally, when I try to copy a folder (floppy <-> HD), the finder alert - "The command could not be completed, because it cannot be copied into itself." with an Ok button comes up. The folder is the culprit 'cos when I copy the enclosed files without the folder every thing is fine; when I try to copy the folder without the files, the same alert box shows up. I don't think I am trying to copy any thing "into itself". Seen it happen with Sys 7.0.1 (Tup 1.1.1) on a IIcx and a PB170 (no unusual extensions, only Extension Manager 1.6, InUse 2.0 Disinfectant 2.7.1, SuperClock 3.9.1, Apollo 0.8b3 and a few Apple System extensions). I thought tha t was a euphimism for readers of the digest. Not so! What I did was to ftp to sumex and check out the cumulative abstract (listing all the subjects of the digests only). Then I got the digests that had that subject. You can also mail your command to archie, here is an example: mail archie@quiche.CS.McGill.CA (ack) prog Print2Pict It is less frustrating. If you ftp to archie you can get a unix program that your host can run to interact with archie in a way "he" prefers. Telnet logon stuff will tell you about that. dxf format might be trickier. First off try the abstract to see if you can catch leads. Next try telnet info.cern.ch to access supercollider project world wide web. Thru them access WAIS, wide area info service. This explodes electronic digests so you can get at the contents as well as the subjects. I haven't used it. Contact ephraim@Think.COM he told me alot about it. The fix for the multiple reference in Word 5 does not work under system 6. It should work under system 7 (another reason to switch, but defintely not until I completely finished and printed my thesis!!!). Under System 6 you can copy the footnote number, but is is not updated. Another drawback is the fact that the copied footnote number (after the 'paste special/picture' does have a different format (much more space between the number and the next character. But perhaps this can be fixed somehow... Nevertheless, I am not satiesfied with this solution. In addition to citations I also have footnotes in my texts. So I can not use footnotes for references. (Almost) too bad... I really miss the ability of word to number and label tables, figures and biblios automaticly. With the help of the heading styles Word can make a list of tables and a list of figures. Why isn't it able to number them? It can also number pages, is it so much more difficult to count tables than it is to count pages?? Perhaps I really ask too much, perhaps there are not so many Word users who ask for this. On the other hand, when poeple ask me if Word is a good tool for writing scientific papers or a thesis, I tell them about these drawbacks. What do guess how many new customers Microsoft gains due to that discussions???? PLEASE, Microsoft, give me a PIM for labelling/referencing whatever I want... It is a system extension, but it is not an "INIT." Rather, it is a background-only application that launches when you start or restart your Macintosh computer. Since it is a background-only application, it need not include any provision for interaction with you, the user, so it can be a very small file; because it is a true application and not an "INIT," it is very unlikely that it will conflict with other system extensions. What it does The purpose of AlphaSound is one that has traditionally been done by "INITs"---it plays a sound when you start up your Mac. AlphaSound requires the new Sound Manager and the new FileManager in System 7. Since it is not an application in the traditional sense, you will find it hard to launch under previous systems, yet, even if you do manage to do so, AlphaSound will politely check its operating environment and silently quit. AlphaSound plays the sound asynchronously-that is, the sound plays while your Macintosh computer continues to do other tasks. This should be archived as alphasound-102.hqx. It replaces the previous (1.0.1) version, and fixes a bug. [Archived as /info-mac/ex/alpha-sound-102.hqx; 34K] ------------------------------ End of Info-Mac Digest ******************************
